What is Viagra?
Viagra is a new drug from Pfizer for use in the
treatment of male impotency. It is the first oral treatment
for male impotence filed with the US Food & Drug Administration
and the European Medicines Evaluation Agency. It was approved
by the FDA, 3/27/98.
How does VIAGRA work?
Viagra is taken orally and is a known as a phosphodiesterase
5 (PDE5) inhibitor. By inhibiting the PDE5 enzyme, which is
found mainly in the penis, Viagra allows the chemical produced
during sexual stimulation, cyclic GMP, to persist. The longer
cyclic GMP persists, the better chance for increased blood flow
and thereby, an erection.
What are the potential side effects?
We have heard that approx. 10% of the study group experienced
side effects such as headaches, nausea, facial flushing, and
diarrhoea. There can be extreme side effects if you are on certain
other medications, please make sure that your doctor is aware
of all of your current medications.
What about Viagra imitations?
There have been vendors selling everything from VAEGRA to VIAGRE
to you name it. Viagra-Global cannot tell you what to buy, except
that if your physician has prescribed Viagra, make
sure you are getting 100% Viagra - and that means
it will have the Pfizer label on the bottle.
What is the VIAGRA WAFER?
Pfizer has announced that it eventually hopes to release
Viagra in a thin wafer form. This would allow the
patient to let it absorb very quickly on the tongue - thereby
increasing the likelihood of sexual spontaneity. Pfizer warns
though that any new form of Viagra will be years
away.
For now, take the pill. In contradiction, to the above "Viagra
Wafer" information reported by CNN, we have also heard
that the wafer is not meant for "fast absorption",
rather it will be made as an alternative for patients that may
have trouble swallowing a tablet.
Who should not take Viagra?
Men who are currently using medicines or treatments which
contain nitrates, such as nitro-glycerine, should not use
Viagra because together they can lower the blood pressure
too much.
Children should not take Viagra.
As with all pharmaceutical products, you should consult
your doctor if you have any doubts about whether Viagra
is suitable for you.
How is Viagra taken?
Viagra should only be used once a day. One tablet
about one hour before sexual activity.
Some possible side effects.
Side effects are rare, but if experienced they are usually mild
and temporary.
